EU to change quota system

Recent campaigning has led to a victory as the EU agrees to end the wasteful fish quota system.

Over a million tons of fish are being discarded each year, as fisherman are forced to stick to the quota system.  This practice was recently exposed by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Big Fish Fight on Chanel 4.

Hugh and other colleagues such as Gordon Ramsey, the Hairy Bikers and Jamie Oliver have also been trying to change the public’s eating habits, to enable less well known species of fish to become part of our every day diet.

Public outcry and support for the campaign which now includes Stephen Fry and Sir Richard Branson, has forced the EU to look at the rules which must be re-written by 2012 and this week, European Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki has announced plans to ban the practice of Discards.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on a Chanel 4 interview with Jon Snow on Tuesday 1st March, said that this is an important step forward but it is only part of a series of necessary reforms.

Time is critical, and it is now time for ministers and officials to get together with the fishermen to ensure that any decisions made, ensure future livelihoods as well as healthy fish stocks.
