Fersness Bay Shellfish Ban Lifted

An article in today’s Orcadian newspaper states that the temporary ban on the commercial harvesting of shellfish from Fersness Bay in Eday has been lifted.

The Food Standards Agency (Scotland) put the ban in place in July after a regular monitoring programme detected the presence of naturally occurring toxin producing plankton in the area.

These toxins which occur naturally, especially during the summer months,
can accumulate in scallops, razor fish (spoots), cockles or mussels and can cause illness if affected shellfish are consumed.
