Fishing in Orkney

Scotland boasts some World class fishing and the Islands of Orkney are no exception.

Brown Trout

Brown Trout

The easy to access lochs provide some of the finest Brown Trout in Britain.  The season runs from 15th March to 6th October inclusive and competitions are held throughout the year.

Lochs in Harray, Boardhouse, Hundland, Swannay, Stenness, Skaill and Kirbister are all to be found on the mainland, whilst the outlaying islands host; Bea, North and Roos on Sanday, Swartmill on Westray, and Meikle Water on Stronsay.

Loch fishing in Orkney is free, with the lochs being stocked, maintained and facilities provided by the local Trout Fishing Association.

Visiting fishermen can support Orkney’s brown trout fishery and show their appreciation of facilities by taking out a subscription to the Association.

Sea and Shore Angling

Shallow sea bays on the eastern coastline of Orkney’s mainland such as Hoy and Scapa Flow, are good for the angler looking to catch sea trout. The Sea Trout season runs from the 25th February until 31st October.

The waters around Orkney are warmed by the North Atlantic Drift, and provide ideal sport for the keen fisherman, whether in the shadow of The Old Man of Hoy, or around the wrecks in Scapa Flow.

If it’s big game you’re after, huge common skate hunt the depths of the Flow, porbeagle shark patrol the Pentland Firth most of the year – peaking from January to April, and halibut are a serious possibility around the headlands bordering the Firth.

Sea anglers are exempt from permits under existing legislation.

Local knowledge is required to make a real success of sea angling in Orkney and local businesses run trips and hire gear to groups of a minimum of 6, subject to weather conditions outside competition dates.
